Endeavor this elementary tutorial to create a personalized line cartoon of your home. Information technology takes a few everyday supplies and no creative ability. Promise.
Do you doubt your ain creative abilities?
You lot aren't lone.
But sometimes, yous have an thought that you just want to execute quickly. (Or in my case, you lot ever take ideas that you desire to execute quickly. In one case an idea pops into my head, I want information technology done before the end of the day. No pressure.)
Such is the case with our living room wall.
I moved the pew into the "entry" and wanted to create something fun and argument-making above information technology. So, I started with a little "homage" to domicile and family unit. I hung the messages HOME then plopped up a family unit photo. Just I wanted something more than.
I knew I had to start with what I have – stacks of frames waiting for a home. But I wanted to do something different than all photographs. (Our last house had a gallery wall filled with blackness-and-white photos of our travels.)
Years ago, my friend Allison drew a line drawing of our start home. And I adore it. But 6 years later on, we accept a few more houses under our belt. And then, I decided to start with photos of our homes.
But, since I wanted something now, I decided to take the cheater approach and attempt to make them myself. I think they look acceptable – fifty-fifty with nil training. (Allison'due south piece is the forepart right.)
This, past the mode, isn't anything I had the slightest inkling how to practice. I'm not an artist. I fifty-fifty hesitated posting this, because there are astonishing artists out there who create beautiful artwork of your domicile. And they are wonderful.
Only, if you want to do something on your own time, y'all can have something personal and lovely to fill your walls.
Something truly personal. But also super like shooting fish in a barrel.
What do you lot demand?
Basically, everything you need is probably already on your desk.
- A laptop computer or tablet
- Textured paper (I similar to utilise resume newspaper, considering I have no plans to print a resume again. I mean, do people actually print resumes?)
- Pencil
- Black ink pen
- Thin Sharpie marker
Next, you'll need to observe an prototype of the home you want to create. Then pull it upwardly on the laptop screen at the size yous want it to be. (In my case, I pulled it up well-nigh every bit big equally the eight.five×11 inch page.)
Then, just place the paper on meridian of the screen. It'due south hard to tell in the film, but you lot can easily meet the photo backside the page, which makes information technology a perfect "lightbox" for your tracing. You lot tin can fifty-fifty push the screen back so information technology'due south flat on the table, if that's easier.
A few tips well-nigh the image:
- Choose something with enough of contrast. In our current home, I chose a Christmas image with lots of snow. It was more than challenging to see those lines when the roof and ground was covered in white.)
- If your image is a little blurry, don't worry. You are but tracing so it doesn't have to be perfect.
- Remember that y'all don't have to depict information technology all. (I neglected to draw power lines, Christmas decorations or other things that popped up in the actual image I didn't want to memorialize on the wall.)
At present, get to work. Using a pencil, carefully trace your image onto the paper. Don't worry about perfection – yous can ever fix information technology or erase information technology. Just lightly get the basic lines and details.
If your paper is having trouble staying in place, endeavour a simple piece of painter'due south tape. But you can always readjust as necessary.
Within nearly 10 minutes, I had the basic outline pencilled in. Anyone can trace. And it's strangely therapeutic.
Adjacent upwardly, use the thin Sharpie to outline those lines. This is when you may desire to pull out the ruler for those long lines. Accept your time and be patient. (And if you make a little mistake, movement on. You lot'll probably never notice when it'south all done.)
If you lot have any other details, fill them in with the ink pen. I used the ink pen for the siding and smaller details that I didn't want as night.
Wondering what the others turned out like?
I think the left is my favorite (our second abode). The barn was a little messy, but I recollect it works. (And if it doesn't, it's like shooting fish in a barrel to try information technology again.)
Now, but a few more than frames and pieces to add to the wall. Which, clearly, I would like to be finished by the end of the mean solar day.
I'm patient like that.
Do y'all desire to make this project for yourself? Pin it for after.
